Persuaded by the doctor that he risks infecting his unborn children, he calls off the engagement, but Laura will not accept that: she threatens suicide. When the doctor points out a little girl who is the diseased result of such a union, Edgar recoils, and agrees to pretend to flirt with another woman to put an end to Laura’s love.
